Adam Hathaway grew up in Huntsville Alabama, home of the Saturn V rocket. He received a B.F.A. in Sculpture from the University of Montevallo, and an M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. Hathaway boasts a broad range of skills including but not limited to: wood working; stone carving; metal casting; MIG, TIG, and oxy-acetylene welding; drawing; drafting; painting(oil, acrylic, and house); and computer illustration. This versatile skill set allows the artist a freedom of expression for giving form to a wide range of conceptual and sculptural approaches, which leads to the artist’s eclectic body of work. While the means of creating the art and the subject matter of this art are constantly in a state of flux, one can notice a conceptual trend throughout. Hathaway makes works that call the viewer’s perception into question. The audience is called on to put a certain amount of energy into relating to the art, either through interacting with the work, or through thoroughly examining what might otherwise be overlooked. There is a sort of Socratic vein to this line of art making and the artwork is offered as a sort of conceptual mirror by which to examine one’s self.
